3 Things We Learned from the Saints’ OTAs Thus Far
By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor
The New Orleans Saints are holding their 2024 OTAs, and several coaches have discussed the team philosophy and scheme in recent interviews. Head Coach Dennis Allen emphasized attention to detail and accountability, a notable shift from last year. Allen even commented on how crisp and sharp the offensive pace was compared to last season, signaling a positive start to the new year. Can the Saints turn their fortunes around and make a playoff run despite the struggles of the past three years? Here are three reasons why Saints supporters should be cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season.

- Marshon Lattimore’s Commitment: Head Coach Dennis Allen confirmed with more certainty that star cornerback Marshon Lattimore will be with the team in the 2024 season. Lattimore, who had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s direction, almost led to a trade situation. His renewed commitment is a significant boost for the Saints’ defense, providing stability and leadership in the secondary.
- Improved Offensive Line: The Saints are starting with first-round tackles Taliese Fuaga on the left and Trevor Penning on the right. New offensive line coach John Benton has expressed his confidence in these players, praising their ability to fit into his run-heavy scheme. Benton’s success in establishing zone schemes in previous roles bodes well for the Saints, who are looking to dominate the trenches and improve their run game.
- Quarterback Development: Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak and QB Coach Andrew Janocko, are focused on refining Derek Carr’s footwork and progressions in the pocket. Janocko highlighted the importance of training Carr’s feet, understanding the offensive nomenclature, and making decisive decisions. The Saints faced severe issues with these aspects last year, but the current coaching staff appears to have found the right formula to address these problems. If successful, fans can expect to see a more efficient and explosive offense in the upcoming season.
With these developments, the New Orleans Saints have reasons to be cautiously optimistic. The combination of renewed commitment from key players, a fortified offensive line, and focused quarterback development could translate into excellent football and a potential playoff run. As always, patience and cautious optimism are key for Saints fans as they look forward to the new season.
