5 Saints Undrafted Free Agents Who Could Shock Everyone During Training Camp

Every NFL training camp produces a surprise.

A player no one expected suddenly flashes, earns the coaching staff’s trust, and carves out a role on the 53-man roster.

The New Orleans Saints know this better than most.

Recent success stories like Rashid Shaheed and Carl Granderson prove that undrafted free agents can become key contributors in New Orleans if they maximize their opportunity.

With Kellen Moore entering his second season as head coach and competition heating up across the roster, several members of the Saints’ 2026 undrafted rookie class have legitimate opportunities to make an impression.

Here are the five UDFAs Big Q believes have the best chance to surprise everyone during training camp.

1. Michael Heldman | Defensive End | Central Michigan

Roster Probability

🟢 High (7.5/10)

2025 Stats

  • 48 tackles
  • 10.5 sacks
  • 16.5 tackles for loss

Heldman arrives in New Orleans with something coaches always value:

Production.

The former Central Michigan captain consistently disrupted opposing quarterbacks while displaying excellent technique, leverage, and relentless effort.

Standing 6-foot-3 and 268 pounds with nearly an 80-inch wingspan, Heldman possesses the physical profile defensive line coaches covet.

The Saints have invested heavily along the defensive front, but quality pass rushers are always in demand.

If Heldman continues producing during preseason games, he could force the coaching staff into making a difficult roster decision.

2. Zxavian Harris | Defensive Tackle | Ole Miss

Roster Probability

🟢 High (7.5/10)

College Career

  • 123 tackles
  • 17.5 tackles for loss
  • 5.5 sacks

At 6-foot-7 and 335 pounds, Harris immediately stands out.

His size alone makes him difficult to move off the line of scrimmage.

But Harris isn’t simply a space-eater.

He also demonstrated impressive athleticism throughout his SEC career while contributing on special teams with multiple blocked kicks.

Even after selecting Christen Miller in the second round, New Orleans still values depth along the defensive line.

Harris possesses enough upside to earn either a rotational role or a protected practice squad spot.

3. Alan Herron | Offensive Line | Maryland

Roster Probability

🟡 Moderate-High (6.5/10)

One number should immediately grab everyone’s attention.

$272,500.

That’s the guaranteed money the Saints committed to Herron following the draft.

Teams don’t invest that type of money into undrafted players without believing they have legitimate NFL potential.

Herron started 24 consecutive games at Maryland after transferring from Division II Shorter University.

His ability to play both tackle and guard increases his value significantly.

With offensive line depth always at a premium, Herron may have one of the clearest paths to earning a roster spot.

4. Brock Rechsteiner | Wide Receiver | Jacksonville State

Roster Probability

🟡 Moderate (5.5/10)

Some fans recognize the name immediately.

Yes…

He’s the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner and cousin of WWE star Bron Breakker.

But Rechsteiner earned his opportunity because of football—not family.

At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, he brings a physical style rarely found among undrafted receivers.

He impressed coaches during rookie minicamp and profiles as the type of player who could become a valuable special teams contributor.

Considering the Saints currently have one of their deepest wide receiver groups in years, earning a roster spot won’t be easy.

Still, his toughness and willingness to block could separate him from other receivers battling for the final spots.

5. CJ Donaldson Jr. | Running Back | Ohio State

Roster Probability

🟠 Developmental (5/10)

Donaldson provides something unique.

Power.

The 230-pound running back rushed for 40 career touchdowns while building a reputation as a dependable short-yardage finisher.

With Travis Etienne, Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, and Devin Neal already competing for carries, Donaldson faces an uphill battle.

However, every NFL team values a physical runner capable of converting tough third-and-short situations.

A strong preseason could quickly elevate his stock.

Honorable Mention

Keeshawn Silver | Nose Tackle | USC

The former five-star recruit remains one of the most intriguing developmental prospects on the roster.

At 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds, Silver has all the physical tools coaches look for in a traditional nose tackle.

Consistency remains the biggest question.

If defensive line coach Bo Davis can unlock Silver’s potential, the Saints may have found another hidden gem.

Film Room

One trend jumps off the tape when studying this year’s UDFA class.

The Saints prioritized size.

Whether it’s Harris at 335 pounds, Donaldson’s bruising running style, Heldman’s pass-rushing production, or Herron’s versatility, New Orleans targeted players with specific NFL traits rather than simply chasing athletic upside.

That approach fits Kellen Moore’s vision of building a more physical football team.

Final Take

Every season, one undrafted player becomes the surprise story of training camp.

This year, my money is on Michael Heldman.

Elite pass rushers are never easy to find, and Heldman’s production speaks for itself.

But don’t overlook Zxavian Harris.

At nearly 340 pounds with SEC experience, he has the physical tools to develop into an important rotational defensive tackle.

If one—or even two—of these undrafted rookies earns a roster spot, the Saints will once again prove why they remain one of the NFL’s best organizations at uncovering hidden talent.

Why It Matters

Championship rosters aren’t built through the draft alone.

Winning organizations consistently find contributors in overlooked places, and the Saints have established a reputation for turning undrafted free agents into meaningful NFL players.

This year’s class has several prospects capable of continuing that tradition.
