by Author Rooks Boxing Contributor

The boxing world mourns the loss of a true icon, as George Foreman, two-time heavyweight champion, Olympic gold medalist, and beloved entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76. Known affectionately as “Big George,” Foreman’s career and life transcended sports, leaving an indelible mark on both the ring and popular culture.

His family described him as a man of profound faith, humility, and purpose—a sentiment echoed by countless fans and peers. Foreman’s rise to glory began with a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics, followed by his emphatic victory over Joe Frazier in 1973, cemented by Howard Cosell’s unforgettable call, “Down goes Frazier!”

Foreman’s career was punctuated by remarkable comebacks, most notably his triumphant return at age 45 when he defeated Michael Moorer to reclaim the heavyweight title, becoming the oldest champion in boxing history. His larger-than-life persona extended beyond the ring as the face of the wildly successful George Foreman Grill.

Inducted into both the World and International Boxing Halls of Fame, Foreman remains a top-25 all-time great in boxing. Survived by his wife, Mary Joan Martelly, and 12 children, Foreman’s legacy as a boxer, entrepreneur, and devoted family man will endure for generations.
