Brian Schottenheimer reveals conversation with George Pickens about effort issues in loss to Lions

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday he had a conversation with wide receiver George Pickens about his social media post directed at Richard Sherman after the former NFL cornerback questioned his effort during this past Thursday’s defeat to the Detroit Lions. Schottenheimer said he isn’t worried about Pickens, who admitted to him he didn’t play his best game in Detroit.

“We talked a little about it. In his words, he goes, ‘Hey, Schotty, I didn’t play my best game.’ Unfortunately, none of us played our best game,” Schottenheimer said. “That’s real. But I don’t worry about George and his love for football and playing this game. Again, you know for five or six weeks, he was the talk of the sporting world: ‘Look at George Pickens.’ We didn’t coach or play well enough to win that game in Detroit. They beat us. It is what it is.”

Pickens finished with five catches on nine targets for 37 yards in the 44-30 loss to the Lions. That represented his least yardage and yards per catch of the season in his first year with the Cowboys. It was especially bad for their offense, too, as  CeeDee Lamb  exited with a concussion, so the Cowboys, who fell to 6-6-1, could’ve used more at that point from Pickens.

Sherman spoke on the Thursday Night Football postgame show on Pickens’ performance. He called him out for looking “uninterested” and said it was “unacceptable” for him to “half-ass it” like he thought he did.

“The big story here is George Pickens,” Sherman said. “George Pickens, throughout the game, especially late in the game, just looked uninterested, uninterested in playing football, you know. And that’s what you can’t have. If you’re gonna be a superstar, if you want to be the best receiver in the National Football League, you can’t ever be disengaged. It doesn’t matter if the game’s going your way or not going your way,” Sherman said. “You can’t just disappear in these games or else you’re not gonna have impact. Just right here? Cruising, cruising routes. You’re the guy! You’re the guy!

“CeeDee Lamb is not in this game. He’s out. And you get intercepted on your slant route. You can’t be the guy and half-ass it. And I’m sorry, you just can’t – it’s unacceptable. And, if you’re the Dallas Cowboys, and you’re looking at him and you’re looking to pay him big-time receiver money, $40 million? You got to look at this tape and say, ‘Hey, is this a guy we can trust paying $40M to show up regardless of circumstance?’ And I don’t know.”
