Canelo Alvarez Claims Belt in Dull Decision Over Scull

By Oscar Cabrera, Boxing Contributor

Canelo Alvarez added another title to his collection Friday night, defeating the elusive and defensive-minded Scary Scull by unanimous decision in what turned out to be a largely uneventful fight. Despite his storied career, Alvarez struggled to make an impact against Scull’s unorthodox strategy of constant movement and minimal engagement.

The fight lacked excitement, with neither fighter delivering the high-intensity exchanges fans had anticipated. Judges scored the bout 118-110, unanimously favoring Alvarez, who earned the victory largely through his consistent bodywork.

The fight’s slow pace and lack of meaningful action frustrated the crowd in attendance. Scull focused almost entirely on avoiding damage, often circling the ring without throwing significant punches. Alvarez attempted to press the action but failed to break through Scull’s defensive shell, landing occasional combinations and body shots that, while effective, didn’t produce the fireworks he’s known for.

In the later rounds, Alvarez grew visibly frustrated, particularly after a late hook landed after a referee break in Round 11, a clear indicator of his mounting exasperation.

While the win against Scull adds to Alvarez’s legacy, it’s clear that the boxing world is already turning its attention to his next blockbuster matchup. In a historic clash, Alvarez will face Terence Crawford, the undisputed welterweight king, for all the belts at super-middleweight.

Alvarez’s consistent work to the body against Scull demonstrated his technical prowess, but he’ll need to deliver a far more dynamic performance against the ever-dangerous Crawford. September 12th promises to be a night for the ages in Las Vegas.
