In a notable move, Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) has decided to relinquish his IBF belt rather than compete in the mandated June 6 fight against the relatively unknown William Scull of Cuba (22-0, 9 KOs), according to multiple boxing sources.
‼️ Canelo Alvarez is reportedly planning to vacate his IBF super-middleweight world title rather than defend vs IBF mandatory challenger William Scull next. Canelo will remain WBA, WBC & WBO super-middleweight world champion. [According to @BoxingScene]

Alvarez, who has held the title of undisputed 168-pound champion since his victory over then-IBF champion Caleb Plant on November 6, 2021, is now looking ahead to potentially facing his WBA mandatory challenger, Edgar Berlanga. As Canelo vacates the IBF title, the sanctioning body is expected to select between contenders Vladimir Shishkin and Christian Mbilli to face Scull for the vacant championship.
