On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers released quarterback Hendon Hooker from their practice squad, per ProFootballTalk. The Panthers also released offensive tackle Michael Tarquin and linebacker Carlos Basham from their practice squad Tuesday.

Hooker signed with the Panthers’ practice squad on Aug. 27. However, two weeks ago, the team signed QB Mike White . On Oct. 30, White was called up to the Panthers’ active roster, signaling the end of Hooker’s time with the organization.

The Detroit Lions selected Hendon Hooker with the No. 68 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft . Hooker had torn his ACL in his final season at Tennessee and was still recovering ahead of his rookie NFL season.

Hooker ultimately was activated off the injured reserve in December 2023, but didn’t see any action in the 2023-24 campaign. Hooker made three brief appearances for the Lions the following season, completing 6-of-his-9 pass attempts for 62 yards, but no touchdowns.

In August of this year, the Lions waived Hooker and he landed with the Panthers. Hooker said the connection he made with Panthers head coach Dave Canales during the draft process in 2023 drew him to joining Carolina.

“I just wanted to go somewhere I was wanted,” Hooker said. “And wanted to develop and learn, and coach told me that he would like me to come learn under him, and we have a great bond from the draft process, just reminiscing on those talks that we had then, I’m eager to learn from him.”

Hooker wasn’t the only one who was hopeful he’d find success with the Panthers. After the organization signed him, Canales raved about Hooker’s talents.
