Carson Wentz injury update: Vikings QB reportedly having season-ending surgery, new starter revealed

According to The Athletic ‘s Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz is done for the season after shoulder surgery. Minnesota will place Wentz on injured reserve after suffering the injury on Thursday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers. Moving forward, the Vikings plan to roll out there with their second-year guy.

“NEWS: Vikings QB Carson Wentz is undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder, sources tell me and @alec_lewis,” Russini said via X. “He will be placed on IR. Wentz played multiple games with the injury. J.J. McCarthy is in line to start for Minnesota in Week 9 against Detroit.”

Wentz wound up starting in five games for the Vikings, sporting a 2-3 record. He threw for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing over 65% of his throws. While Minnesota may have wanted another win or two, not an overall bad performance given the circumstances.

Max Brosmer spent Thursday night as the backup quarterback. When Wentz left the game due to his injury, Brosmer entered in relief. McCarthy was the emergency third quarterback, available to play if anything had happened to Brosmer.

However, McCarthy finds himself slotting back into the starting role against Detroit. Currently in last place of the NFC North, the Vikings are in need of a victory to keep pace in the division. McCarthy provided exciting moments earlier in the season and needs to once again come through.
