Chargers' Justin Herbert undergoes successful hand surgery, considered day to day

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery on his left non-throwing hand Monday and is day to day, the team announced.

Herbert, however, intends to play in his team’s Week 14 game against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier on Monday.

“Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery today in Los Angeles to stabilize a fracture in his left hand,” the statement read. “Herbert’s return to play is considered day-to-day, and his status for next Monday’s game against Philadelphia will be determined later in the week.”

Herbert was injured during the Chargers’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, but only missed a few snaps. Though there’s a full week of practice ahead before the Chargers face the Eagles on Monday, Dec. 8, Herbert is focused on playing in the game, Rapoport reported.

As noted by Rapoport, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen played through a fractured left hand in the 2024 season and Aaron Rodgers played with multiple fractures in his left wrist on Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hebert previously played with a broken middle finger on his left hand in 2023, though his season was ended by a fracture on his right index finger later that season.

The Chargers are 8-4 after Sunday’s win, in which Herbert was 15 of 20 for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Through 12 games this season, Herbert has completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,842 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Since Herbert was drafted by the Chargers and became their starter in 2020, the team is 1-4 in games he’s missed due to an injury. Herbert’s yet to miss a game since Jim Harbaugh became head coach ahead of the 2024 campaign.
