Colts name Daniel Jones starting QB over Anthony Richardson for Week 1

The Indianapolis Colts are electing to go with the more experienced option under center to begin a pivotal 2025 season.

The Colts naming Daniel Jones their starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson for their regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7, the team announced on Tuesday.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero first reported the news. Pelissero added that Colts head coach Shane Steichen informed the QBs of his decision on Tuesday morning.

“He’s the starting quarterback for the season,” Steichen said of Jones on Tuesday, via the Indianapolis Star. “I don’t want to have a short leash on that.”

The news comes days after Indianapolis’ second preseason game in which Jones completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards while Richardson went 6-of-11 passing for 73 yards.

The Colts signed Jones this offseason as competition for Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft who had struggled with both health and performance in his first two seasons.
