Colts QB Daniel Jones suffers Achilles injury in loss to Jaguars

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was ruled out of Sunday’s 36-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars after he suffered an Achilles injury late in the first quarter.

Jones fell to the turf in pain after completing a pass to Alec Pierce for a 7-yard gain, grabbing his right leg. The Colts QB slammed his helmet on the turf as the team’s medical staff tended to him on the field at EverBank Stadium.

Jones limped to the locker room before being ruled out early in the second quarter. He returned to the sideline in the second half with a boot on his right foot.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters after the loss that Jones’ Achilles injury could be season-ending.

“It’s not looking good,” Steichen said.

Rookie Riley Leonard entered the game for Jones with the Colts trailing the Jaguars in a key AFC South game in Week 14. Leonard couldn’t rally Indy, finishing 18-of-29 passing for 145 yards, a interception and a rushing touchdown.

Jones, who had been playing with a fractured fibula in his left leg the past two games, finished 5-of-7 passing for 60 yards and an interception on Sunday.

It’s a brutal development for Jones and the Colts. The 28-year-old QB began his first season in Indianapolis as a revelation, leading the Colts to an 8-2 record before injuries halted the hot start. Jones joined the Colts on a one-year deal this offseason.

The Colts remain in the playoff picture despite dropping their third straight game on Sunday. Leonard, who has yet to start a game in his NFL career, figures to be relied on with Indy’s playoff hopes on the line if Jones is unable to go. Anthony Richardson is on injured reserve, while veteran QB Brett Rypien is on the practice squad.

Indianapolis (8-5) plays at the Seattle Seahawks (10-3) in Week 15.
