The tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland has rocked the football world, and in its fallout many have expressed condolences to his friends, family and teammates. Daryl Johnston, a former fullback with the Cowboys, shared his thoughts on Dallas’ former second-round draft pick.
Johnston was on the call for FOX during the Week 10 matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings. He audibly emotional when discussing Kneeland’s passing.
“It was a tough week in Dallas,” Johnston started before needing a pause to contain his emotion. “Woo. The football family, it’s just so hard when you lose people like that. We lost players during my years. If you have a question, reach out. Don’t let somebody take that journey alone.
“Greg Ellis is heartbroken right now because he had been working with Marshawn Kneeland. And you know the guilt that he’s feeling right now because he didn’t stay in as constant touch because he feels like he could’ve made an impact.”
Ellis is the assistant linebackers coach in Dallas, and joined the coaching staff at the same time he was drafted into the program ahead of the 2024 season. He helped Kneeland total 26 career tackles, five tackles for a loss, and 1.0 sacks across 18 career games, which included four starts. Before becoming a Cowboy, he starred as a defender for the Western Michigan Broncos.
Off the field, Kneeland had a girlfriend. He also survived by his father and his three siblings. Johnston ended his emotional message with a powerful sentiment regarding mental health.
