During the Steelers’ 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Pittsburgh wide receiver DK Metcalf had a heated altercation with a fan. After grabbing the wig the Lions fan was wearing, Metcalf punched the fan in the face and walked away.
The game’s officials didn’t see the altercation occur in real-time and Metcalf finished the game. On Monday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Metcalf had history with the fan and had previously reported him to the Seahawks’ security team, when the two-time Pro Bowler still played for Seattle.
Further, Pelissero reported that a source close to Metcalf told him the fan, whose name is Ryan Kennedy, called Metcalf’s mom a derogatory word and called the wideout “something we both know you don’t call a black man.” On Monday, Kennedy’s attorneys released a statement addressing these claims.
“Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the ‘N-word,’ the ‘C-word,’ or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur during the incident that occurred on December 21, 2025 at Ford Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Detroit Lions game,” the statement released by Sean Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm reads. “These allegations are completely false.
“At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind. The claims suggesting otherwise are untrue and are not supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, or any contemporaneous reporting. … Mr. Kennedy is a lifelong Detroit Lions football fan who attended the game lawfully and never anticipated becoming the subject of national attention, much less false accusations of racism. He respects the game, the players, and fellow fans— and he rejects hate and
discrimination in all forms.”
