New details have emerged surrounding the on-field altercation involving DK Metcalf during Pittsburgh’s Week 16 win over the Detroit Lions. They shed light on a prior history between the star receiver and the fan he confronted.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Metcalf had previously reported the same fan to stadium security last season while he was still with the Seattle Seahawks. Sources told Pelissero that the NFL is now reviewing the incident for potential discipline.
The report adds troubling context to what unfolded Sunday at Ford Field. A source close to Metcalf said the fan, who identified himself to the Detroit Free Press as Ryan Kennedy, allegedly directed a derogatory comment toward Metcalf’s mother and used a racial slur toward the receiver. The fan, however, claimed Metcalf reacted because he was called by his full legal name.
Moreover, the incident occurred late in the second quarter near halftime, with the game tied at three. Metcalf approached the stands along the sideline as the fan leaned over the railing. Video showed Metcalf throwing a punch before walking away. Because Metcalf was off the field at the time, no in-game ejection or immediate punishment was issued.
Following the 29–24 win, Metcalf declined to address the situation publicly. According to reporting from Mike DeFabo of The Athletic , the veteran wideout exited the locker room without speaking to reporters. Head coach Mike Tomlin also did not comment during his postgame press conference, later noting that while he had heard about the incident, he had not seen it.
