DK Metcalf suspension activates brutal contract clause, costs WR massive sum of money

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will forfeit more than $555,000 in salary after the NFL suspended him for two games without pay on Monday for punching a Detroit Lions fan during Sunday’s game. It goes even further than that, however.

The NFL suspended Metcalf for conduct detrimental to the league. Metcalf is appealing the suspension but if upheld, it voids at least $45 million in future guaranteed money, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, who reviewed a copy of Metcalf’s four-year, $132 million contract he signed in March.

The contract notes that if Metcalf “fails… to practice or play with the Club for any reason,” which includes “Player’s suspension by the NFL or Club for Conduct Detrimental,” his guarantees “will be NULL AND VOID.” Metcalf would still be able to earn that money over the next two years, Jones wrote.

But his 2026 salary of $25 million fully guaranteed hangs in the balance. If he is suspended for at least one game, that guarantee is void. In 2027, $20 million of his salary is injury protected. If the suspension holds, that guarantee is no longer. So, Metcalf will argue his case. Commissioner Roger Goodell or one of his designees will hear his appeal.

Metcalf’s altercation with the fan came during the second quarter. Metcalf approached the stands along the sideline as the fan leaned over the railing. Video showed Metcalf throwing a punch before walking away. Since Metcalf was off the field at the time, no in-game ejection or immediate punishment was issued.
