In a highly anticipated opening weekend matchup of college football giants, the No. 8 Florida State Seminoles delivered a resounding 45-24 victory over the fifth-ranked LSU Tigers. The game showcased the Seminoles’ dominance on both sides of the ball and extended their winning streak to seven games, firmly positioning them as early contenders for the College Football Playoff.
The turning point of the game occurred on fourth downs, where FSU’s defense rose to the occasion. They thwarted the Tigers on two crucial fourth-down attempts in the first half, including a goal-line stand that left LSU empty-handed. The pivotal moment came when FSU quarterback Jordan Travis connected with Lawrance Toafili for a 41-yard gain on fourth-and-2, setting up Travis to score on the ensuing play, giving the Seminoles a 24-17 lead. However, the star of the game was Keon Coleman, a transfer from Michigan State, who showcased his talents with 9 receptions for 122 yards, including three touchdown receptions of 40, 21, and 7 yards.
Travis displayed his brilliance in the second half, completing 11 of 13 passes as the Seminoles seized control of the game. A highlight-reel moment came when Travis found South Carolina transfer Jaheim Bell for a 44-yard touchdown, effectively sealing the victory. Travis concluded the game with 342 passing yards and four touchdowns, connecting with Coleman for two crucial scores. The LSU quarterback, Jayden Daniels, struggled to match Travis’s performance, finishing with 347 yards, an interception, and a late 75-yard touchdown.
Florida State‘s success hinged on their ability to stop LSU on fourth downs, preventing potential double-digit deficits in the first half. Despite the Tigers’ explosive plays, they failed to convert on fourth-down attempts in key moments. LSU coach Brian Kelly faces significant defensive challenges moving forward, as his team allowed 483 yards and struggled on third downs, allowing FSU to convert 8 of 13 crucial third-down plays.
Florida State‘s victory underscores years of preparation and talent development under coach Mike Norvell, who leveraged the transfer portal and nurtured emerging talent within the program. As the Seminoles celebrate their triumph, LSU will regroup and look to make defensive adjustments before facing Grambling State in their next matchup.
