Phidarian Mathis is receiving another shot in the NFL. The former Alabama defensive tackle inked a deal with the Buffalo Bills to join their practice squad, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Wisner, Louisiana, native entered the league as a second-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2022. Injuries derailed his time in Washington, and he later spent a stint with the New York Jets. Now, he’ll look to carve out an opportunity in Buffalo.

“The Bills have signed former #Commanders second-rounder Phidarian Mathis to their practice squad,” Rapoport posted on X. In his career, Mathis has accumulated 25 total tackles, one pass deflection and one fumble recovery.

Mathis’ college résumé continues to provide reason for optimism. At Alabama, he steadily progressed before putting together a breakout senior season. In 2018, he totaled 18 tackles and a fumble recovery. As a sophomore in 2019, he posted 27 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. A year later, he tallied 31 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three passes defended, and another forced fumble.

His 2021 campaign was his best. In 14 games, Mathis anchored Alabama’s defensive line with 53 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two passes defended, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
