Former Ohio State, Jets center Nick Mangold opens up about genetic defect, is seeking kidney donor

Former All-Pro center Nick Mangold went to social media on Tuesday to reveal that he is seeking a kidney donor.

Mangold, who played at Ohio State from 2002-2005 before being drafted by the New York Jets (where he played from 2006-2019), revealed that he was diagnosed with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease in 2006. 19 years later, Mangold is undergoing dialysis and is now in need of a kidney donor with Type O blood.

“To my NY Jets & Ohio State Buckeyes communities, this isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with me in my health,” Mangold wrote. “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.”
