Former Pelicans Coach James Borrego Front Runner for Cavs Job?

By Rell Wright Pelicans Contributor

Former New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego has been appointed as the new head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, as confirmed by NBA insider Marc Stein. Borrego, who previously held head coaching positions with the Orlando Magic and Charlotte Hornets, has garnered significant praise for his impressive interview performance. At 46 years old, Borrego brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the Cavaliers, who are looking to enhance their competitiveness in the league.

In a related development, another former Pelican has transitioned into a head coaching role. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers and J.J. Redick have agreed on a four-year deal, making Redick the team’s next head coach. The deal is valued at approximately $8 million per season, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Sam Amick, and Jovan Buha. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka expressed confidence in Redick’s ability to connect with players and utilize his high basketball IQ. By surrounding Redick with an elite coaching staff, Pelinka believes Redick can quickly adapt to his first coaching position and lead the team effectively.

In contrast, the Detroit Pistons have decided to part ways with head coach Monty Williams after just one season, despite signing him to a record-setting six-year, $78.5 million contract. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first broke the news of Williams’ firing, which leaves the Pistons responsible for over $65 million in payments for his early departure.

Detroit’s dismal 14-68 record, the worst in franchise history, and a record-setting 28-game losing streak led to this drastic decision. With the recent hiring of Trajan Langdon as the new president of basketball operations, the Pistons are undergoing a significant restructuring in hopes of reversing their prolonged misfortunes.
