In a recent address to the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon, New Orleans Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, David Griffin, provided a glimpse into the team’s preparations for the upcoming NBA season. With a focus on player health and performance, Griffin shed light on the changes made to the Pelicans’ sports and performance team, particularly in light of star forward Zion Williamson‘s injury history.
The spotlight has consistently been on Zion Williamson, who has faced a series of injuries that have impacted his career. Griffin, however, offered a glimmer of hope and optimism for Pelicans fans, stating that Williamson has shown an unprecedented level of dedication this offseason.
Griffin remarked, “Zion Williamson has spent more time in our gym this offseason than at any point in his NBA career. He has been in New Orleans virtually all offseason, which is different.” This level of commitment from Williamson has undoubtedly been a positive sign for the Pelicans’ organization and their fans.
The frustration over promising seasons marred by injuries was a driving force behind the changes implemented in the Pelicans’ sports and performance team over the summer. Aaron Nelson, who had served as the team’s Vice President of Player Care and Performance for four years, was let go as part of this overhaul.
Griffin explained, “What we tried to do this offseason was not sit there and say, ‘Wow, if we could just be healthy, we could be really good,’ because hope is not a plan.” He emphasized that the financial support from Mrs. Gayle Benson, the team’s owner, allowed them to take a different approach, particularly on the medical side.
While the Pelicans have yet to announce who will lead the sports and performance team in the upcoming season, Griffin confirmed that they had hired a physical therapist to join the staff. Additionally, several players have chosen to remain in New Orleans throughout the summer, focusing on their physical conditioning and preparation for the upcoming season.
Williamson’s dedication and willingness to put in the work have not gone unnoticed by the organization. Griffin praised the young star’s efforts, saying, “He has put a lot of time into that. For us, we have certainly learned over the years what we think works and doesn’t work. But a huge part of that is incumbent on him. A huge part of that is, ‘Is he willing to do what it takes to be successful?’”
As the Pelicans gear up for the new season, fans eagerly anticipate seeing a healthier and more prepared Zion Williamson, potentially bringing a new level of excitement and competitiveness to the team. Griffin’s comments provide hope that the Pelicans are taking proactive steps to ensure their star player’s longevity and success in the NBA.
