Devin Haney has formally requested that his recent loss to Ryan Garcia be overturned to a disqualification win following Garcia’s failed doping test, according to a letter to the New York State Athletic Commission obtained by ESPN. Garcia tested positive for the anabolic agent ostarine before and after his majority-decision win over Haney in Brooklyn. Garcia’s B-sample is set for examination on May 22. Haney’s attorney, Pat English, argues that Garcia gained an unfair advantage by missing weight and using prohibited IVs, which can dilute urine to avoid drug detection.
If found culpable, Garcia’s win could be changed to a no contest or a disqualification. Garcia’s attorney, Darin Chavez, dismissed the claims as excuses, maintaining that Garcia’s victory was due to his superior fighting. This situation recalls precedent cases where failed doping tests led to altered fight results. Garcia, who maintains his innocence, floored Haney three times in the bout, marking the first time Haney had been knocked down in his career.
