Hawkins Shines in Vain as Pelicans Fall to Nuggets’ Onslaught, 134-116

In a display of robust offensive firepower, the Denver Nuggets decisively outplayed the New Orleans Pelicans, finishing with a commanding score of 134-116. Despite the loss, New Orleans rookie Jordan Hawkins shone brightly, establishing a new personal best with a remarkable 31 points, which included precision shooting from beyond the arc, hitting 7 out of 14 attempts. Zion Williamson also put up an impressive performance for the Pelicans with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. Brandon Ingram contributed significantly with 22 points.

The Pelicans faced the game without CJ McCollum, who was sidelined due to a collapsed lung as revealed by an MRI, an injury that will likely keep him off the court for multiple games. Coach Willie Green commented on McCollum’s condition, suggesting cautious optimism as they awaited further tests to assess the situation.

Initially, New Orleans showcased their long-range prowess, sinking 10 of 17 from the 3-point line and securing a 20-point lead in the second quarter. However, their advantage dissipated as Denver rallied, outscoring them significantly in a game-changing run spanning the second and third quarters. Nikola Jokic, Denver’s two-time MVP, was instrumental in this turnaround, achieving a triple-double that included an assist to Collin Gillespie for a 3-pointer, propelling Denver into the lead.

Even with Hawkins’ spirited efforts, including a critical 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, the Nuggets maintained control. Contributions from Strawther and an authoritative dunk by Gordon expanded their lead. The Pelicans did manage to reduce the deficit to seven points later in the game, but Jokic’s assist to Porter for an alley-oop was the nail in the coffin, solidifying Denver’s victory.

Looking ahead, the Pelicans aim to bounce back as they continue their three-game road trip, setting their sights on a match against Minnesota on Wednesday night.
