Ring Kings Weekend Wrap: Hrgovic Shocks Itauma, Cameron Unifies and Lara Survives a Scare

The final boxing weekend of August delivered a heavyweight shocker, a major women’s championship unification, a violent comeback in Mexico and another statement from one of the super-middleweight division’s rising contenders.
Filip Hrgovic captured the vacant IBF heavyweight championship by stopping previously undefeated Moses Itauma. Chantelle Cameron added two more championship belts by defeating Mikaela Mayer, Mauricio Lara survived an early knockdown to stop Carlos Ornelas and Lester Martinez strengthened his position in the crowded 168-pound title picture.

Filip Hrgovic Stops Moses Itauma in Heavyweight Upset
Filip Hrgovic entered London’s O2 Arena as the experienced underdog. He left as Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion.
Hrgovic stopped 21-year-old British sensation Moses Itauma in the ninth round to capture the vacant IBF heavyweight championship.
Itauma appeared to be on his way to fulfilling the enormous expectations surrounding him during the first half of the fight. His speed, combinations and explosiveness repeatedly gave Hrgovic problems.
Itauma reportedly outlanded Hrgovic 109-48 through the first six rounds, but the young challenger was fighting at a demanding pace that he could not maintain.
Hrgovic remained composed, absorbed Itauma’s best attacks and waited for the fight to enter unfamiliar territory for the heavily promoted prospect.
That patience changed everything.
Itauma began showing serious signs of fatigue during the eighth round. His movement slowed, his punches lost their sharpness and Hrgovic started landing increasingly damaging shots.
By the ninth, Itauma had almost nothing left. Hrgovic trapped him near the ropes and continued punching until trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel at the 2:27 mark.
The victory improved Hrgovic’s record to 21-1 and made him the new IBF heavyweight champion. Itauma fell to 14-1 with 12 knockouts.
The result was confirmed by ESPN’s ringside coverage.
Experience Defeats Youth
The result does not mean Itauma lacks championship talent. It means he was asked to make a difficult jump before being fully prepared for a long, physically demanding heavyweight title fight.
Before facing Hrgovic, Itauma had rarely been forced to fight deep into a contest. Most of his opponents had been unable to survive his early power and hand speed.
Hrgovic did more than survive. He forced Itauma to manage his energy, fight while tired and respond to sustained pressure from a full-sized, experienced heavyweight.
Those were questions Itauma had never been required to answer professionally.
Hrgovic later praised Itauma’s talent but criticized the young fighter’s pacing and tactical decisions. The new champion argued that Itauma fought too aggressively and wasted energy attempting to force an early finish.
That analysis is difficult to dispute. Itauma won most of the early rounds, but Hrgovic won the battle that mattered most: the battle of survival.
What Comes Next for Hrgovic?
Hrgovic’s victory immediately places him in the middle of the heavyweight championship picture.
The Croatian has expressed interest in unification fights and major paydays. Potential future opponents could include champions and leading contenders such as Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel or another major name from the division.
The IBF could also order Hrgovic to face a mandatory challenger before allowing him to pursue unification.
At 34 years old, Hrgovic will want to capitalize on this victory quickly. He finally owns the championship that eluded him during his earlier title opportunity against Dubois.
His ability to withstand Itauma’s early assault should make him an attractive opponent for any heavyweight who believes Hrgovic can be outboxed—but Saturday proved that putting him away is an entirely different challenge.
What Comes Next for Itauma?
The first defeat of Itauma’s career will test both the fighter and the team managing him.
Itauma was taken to a hospital for precautionary examinations after leaving the arena with assistance. He was later reported to be in stable condition and told supporters that he intends to return.
At only 21, Itauma has plenty of time to rebuild.
The worst response would be attempting to erase the loss by rushing him into another dangerous fight. His team should use the setback to improve his pacing, conditioning, defense and ability to remain effective after the early rounds.
The physical talent is still obvious. The question is whether Itauma can turn this defeat into the experience he lacked against Hrgovic.
A loss does not destroy a fighter’s future. How that fighter responds to the loss determines what the future becomes.
Sam Noakes Dominates Denys Berinchyk
In the heavyweight card’s co-feature, Sam Noakes delivered one of the most complete performances of his career against former WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk.
Noakes controlled the 10-round contest and earned a unanimous decision by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92.
Berinchyk entered the fight with considerably more championship-level experience, but Noakes consistently outworked and outlanded him.
The victory improved Noakes’ record to 19-1 and should move him closer to another significant lightweight opportunity.
Other results from the London card included:
- Nelson Hysa stopped Thomas Narmo in the second round.
- Constantin Ursu stopped Ben Vaughan at the beginning of the eighth round.
- Guido Vianello and Moses Jolly fought to a points draw.

Chantelle Cameron Defeats Mikaela Mayer to Unify Titles
Chantelle Cameron produced another career-defining performance by defeating Mikaela Mayer via unanimous decision in Birmingham, England.
Cameron entered the fight holding the WBO junior-middleweight championship and left with Mayer’s WBA and WBC belts.
The judges scored the fight 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94 for Cameron.
The bout was competitive and physical. Cameron suffered a cut near her eye following an accidental clash of heads but remained composed and continued pressing the action.
Mayer had success boxing from distance and believed she had done enough to win. Cameron, however, consistently forced the exchanges and landed the more influential punches during several close rounds.
The victory gave Cameron her fifth consecutive win since losing her rematch against Katie Taylor in 2023.
Cameron now controls three major championships in the division and has strengthened her claim as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in women’s boxing.

Should Cameron and Mayer Fight Again?
The post-fight disagreement created an obvious path toward a rematch.
Mayer maintained that she outboxed Cameron, while Cameron offered to face her again. Because the fight was competitive despite the unanimous scorecards, a second meeting would be commercially viable.
However, Cameron is now in the stronger negotiating position.
She could pursue a rematch with Mayer, seek the remaining championship required to become undisputed or explore another major fight against one of women’s boxing’s biggest names.
A rematch would be justified, but Cameron has earned the right to determine which opportunity provides the greatest reward.
Caroline Dubois Retains Her Lightweight Championships
Caroline Dubois remained unbeaten with a dominant unanimous-decision victory over Amelia Moore in the Birmingham co-main event.
All three judges scored the fight 100-88 for Dubois, who improved to 14-0-1 with five knockouts.
Dubois dropped Moore and controlled the action with her speed, accuracy and technical ability. The victory allowed her to retain the WBC and WBO lightweight championships.
The most interesting moment may have occurred after the fight, when Dubois exchanged words with Alycia Baumgardner.
Baumgardner criticized Dubois’ performance, while Dubois confidently fired back. The confrontation immediately created interest in a future matchup between two of women’s boxing’s most prominent champions.
For Dubois, the next step should be a significant unification fight. She has proven that she is above the level of most developmental challengers and needs an opponent capable of testing her under pressure.
Mauricio Lara Survives Knockdown and Stops Carlos Ornelas
Mauricio “Bronco” Lara once again reminded boxing fans why his fights are rarely predictable.
Carlos Ornelas dropped Lara during the opening round of their all-Mexican super-featherweight battle in Guadalajara. Lara recovered, returned the favor before the round ended and then overwhelmed Ornelas in the second.
Ornelas suffered a cut and absorbed sustained punishment before the fight was stopped.
The victory improved Lara’s record to 31-3-2 with 24 knockouts. Ornelas fell to 29-6.

Lara remains one of boxing’s most dangerous pressure fighters, but the early knockdown demonstrated that his aggressive style continues to leave him vulnerable.
He can change a fight with one punch, but he can also be hurt before he has an opportunity to land it.
If Lara intends to pursue a championship in a second division, his defense must improve. Against the elite fighters at super featherweight, repeatedly relying on his chin and recovery powers is a dangerous strategy.
Lester Martinez Stops Luka Plantic
Lester Martinez remained undefeated by stopping Luka Plantic in the 10th round of their WBC interim super-middleweight championship fight in Los Angeles.
Plantic applied consistent pressure, but Martinez was the sharper and more accurate fighter. Martinez controlled the exchanges before producing the late stoppage.
The victory strengthened Martinez’s position as a potential opponent for the winner of a future major super-middleweight championship contest.
Martinez has now moved beyond prospect status. He is a legitimate contender in one of boxing’s most financially important divisions.
The challenge will be securing a major opponent. Championship-level fighters at 168 pounds have several lucrative options, and Martinez may represent more danger than financial reward.

Corey Marksman Remains Unbeaten
Corey “2 Smooth” Marksman defeated Christian Barreto by unanimous decision over 10 rounds in Orlando.
Marksman remained unbeaten, but Barreto forced him to work throughout the contest. The victory continued Marksman’s development while demonstrating that he still needs additional seasoning before challenging the lightweight division’s top names.
On the same card, unbeaten junior-middleweight Alex Bray stopped Antraveous Ingram after eight rounds when Ingram declined to continue.
Marksman’s victory was not the most spectacular performance of the weekend, but these types of rounds can be valuable for a developing fighter. He gained experience against resistance instead of collecting another quick knockout against an overmatched opponent.
