Ingram Trade Rumors and Markkanen’s Extension
By Rell Wright, Pelicans Contributor
As August 6 approaches, the Utah Jazz face a critical decision with Lauri Markkanen becoming eligible to renegotiate and extend his contract. This move would allow the Jazz to use most of their cap space to raise Markkanen’s 2024-25 salary from $18 million to his maximum, securing him long-term on a deal that matches his impressive performance.
Meanwhile, Brandon Ingram’s future with the New Orleans Pelicans is under scrutiny as trade rumors swirl, with the Jazz emerging as a possible new home. NBA insiders, including Clark, have highlighted the Jazz’s interest in Ingram, pointing out that his dynamic scoring and playmaking abilities would be a great fit.
Ingram, who averaged 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks in the 2023-24 season, would be a significant addition to the Jazz. His career averages of 19.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists, along with his 2019-20 Most Improved Player of the Year Award, show his value. The Jazz’s current roster includes big men like Walker Kessler, John Collins, Drew Eubanks, and Kyle Filipowski, offering the versatility and defensive strength that Pelicans executive David Griffin has been seeking.
Kessler’s rim protection, Collins’ ability to play both power forward and center, and their collective athleticism and outside shooting make the Jazz an attractive destination for Ingram. Moreover, Ingram’s camp, according to Marc Stein of the Stein Line, is looking for teams willing to pay him $210 million, making the financial flexibility of the Jazz a critical factor in this potential trade.
