Have Lions located Ragnow’s replacement?
Frank Ragnow‘s retirement forced the Lions to get creative with their starting offensive line entering this season.
Their first choice: Move Graham Glasgow from guard to center. So far, so good.
Coach Dan Campbell told reporters Tuesday the change is working well for the Lions offense, which has looked promising with Glasgow manning the starting pivot.
“We just finished two days with Graham back at center in pads, and it’s looked pretty good,” Campbell said. “It’s looked pretty dang good. I think every day that it looks pretty dang good, it gets a little clearer.”
Shifting Glasgow to center required replacing him at guard, for which Detroit prepared by selecting Georgia lineman Tate Ratledge in the second round of April’s draft. Lions fans will have to wait a week to see Ratledge (and first-round defensive tackle Tyleik Williams) in game action, though, as Campbell revealed Detroit will hold their first two picks out of action in Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers.
“We’ve talked about it as a staff and it’s like ‘why don’t we just wait, maybe play them in Atlanta (on Aug. 8)?’ ” Campbell said, per the Detroit Free Press. “So we’ll hold tight, make sure they get plenty of reps out here (in practice).”
Campbell’s decision to sit Williams and Ratledge suggests his staff is preparing for both rookies to play important roles in Detroit’s 2025 campaign. With offseason losses at both position groups, their success may be vital to the Lions’ hopes of surpassing their 2024 finish.
