Penn State’s head coach James Franklin seemed quite excited to indulge in some non-conference scheduling discussions during his press conference on Wednesday at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas. The question of Pitt came up for Franklin, and whether the Nittany Lions will ever revisit a once-rivalry game between the two biggest programs in the state of Pennsylvania. “I’d be all about a discussion about Pitt,” said Franklin. “We have played Pitt non-conference, we have played West Virginia non-conference, we played Auburn non-conference and had success in all of them.” Penn State and Pitt have been playing football games dating back to 1893, and have played a total of 100 times. But, the teams haven’t squared off since 2019, ending a streak from 2016-2019 of four yearly matchups.
