Contract standoffs with Jerry Jones usually end in players getting paid. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb would tell you so, getting a nice lump of cash last offseason. But Micah Parsons experienced a different result, winding up with the Green Bay Packers due to a blockbuster trade.
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Jones continually stated how this will benefit Dallas moving forward. Dallas decided to go with a trade for a reason. Jones believes if the Cowboys wanted to extend Parsons, they could have.
“The benefits of the trade made it different,” Jones said when asked about comparisons to Prescott and Lamb. “Make no mistake about it. We all know we could have signed Micah. But we decided to go with the trade.”
Looking at draft capital, Dallas received two first-round picks in return for Parsons. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark was part of the return as well, somebody the team will instantly rely on. A common theme of the press conference was Jones saying the Cowboys needed to be able to stop the run. Clark, playing up the middle, helps them out more than Parsons, the pass rusher.
NFL’s Jane Slater caught up with Parsons shortly after the trade was made. She reports Parsons approached the Cowboys with the intent of getting an extension done. Instead, an ultimatum was given and the two went their separate ways.
