Jets Land Aaron Glenn as Head Coach Amid Saints Coaching Search

By Niles Carpenter, Saints Contributor

Aaron Glenn’s “dream job” became a reality Wednesday as he agreed in principle to become the 18th full-time head coach in New York Jets history. The former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, who was a first-round pick by the Jets in 1994, returns to the franchise where he starred as a player, making two Pro Bowls during his tenure. Glenn, 52, a disciple of Bill Parcells, brings leadership and a deep connection to the Jets’ history.

His hiring comes at a critical time for the franchise, which is eager to end its 14-season playoff drought, the longest in North American sports. Alongside Glenn, the Jets are close to naming Lance Newmark, the former Washington Commanders assistant GM, as their new general manager. Newmark and Glenn share a professional relationship dating back to their time in Detroit from 2021 to 2023, a synergy that Jets ownership hopes will bring stability and success.

The New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, face challenges in their own head-coaching search. Unprecedented weather has delayed interviews with key candidates, including Mike Kafka, Joe Brady, and Mike McCarthy. The Saints reportedly had strong interest in Glenn, given his ties to New Orleans as a former player and secondary coach under Sean Payton.

However, the Jets acted swiftly, hosting Glenn for an in-person interview just days after Detroit’s playoff exit. This setback for the Saints underscores the urgency of resuming their search, as delays may allow other teams to secure top candidates. The Saints’ next moves will be crucial in shaping the team’s future, as they navigate through a competitive coaching market.
