Big Q examines Moore’s response, Wednesday’s injuries and the responsibility to turn the Saints’ urgency into results.
NEW ORLEANS — Gayle Benson challenged the Saints to deliver better football. Kellen Moore’s response now has to become visible in how his team prepares, adjusts and performs.
With New Orleans at 1–4, Moore addressed the owner’s criticism Wednesday, October 14, saying the organization shares the desire for better results. His comments followed Benson’s public rejection of the team’s start a day earlier. Moore’s response
On this edition of Drive Time with Big Q, The Sports Coma examines Moore’s response, the Wednesday injury report and the leadership questions surrounding Benson, general manager Mickey Loomis, the coaching staff and the locker room.

Benson’s challenge reaches every level
Speaking at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club on October 13, Benson assigned responsibility across the organization: Moore and his coaches for preparation, Loomis and the football staff for building the roster, players for execution, and herself for oversight. Benson’s speech and transcript
“Words will not restore our fans’ confidence. Our performance must do that.”— Gayle Benson
That statement gives the discussion a useful standard. Accountability should produce identifiable corrections, clear expectations and an honest evaluation of whether those corrections work. Public frustration alone cannot organize a protection call or repair a missed assignment.
For background, read our earlier coverage of Benson’s challenge to Moore and Loomis.
What Moore said—and what his response must become
Moore said “we all want better results” and emphasized improvement in both coaching and playing. He described a shared objective inside the building and a need to move forward with better football. Wednesday comments
The Who Dat Daily’s analysis: The next step is specificity. A coaching staff should be able to identify the recurring problem, explain the correction to its players and measure whether the change survives game conditions.
For Moore, practical areas to review include the opening script, answers against pressure, manageable throws for Tyler Shough and the situations that determine whether drives continue. These are evaluation priorities, rather than announced changes to Sunday’s game plan.
The numbers show why the pressure is justified
Saints performance through Week 5
| Category | Per game | NFL rank |
|---|---|---|
| Offensive yards | 322.0 | 20th |
| Rushing yards | 81.8 | 29th |
| Points allowed | 30.2 | 31st |
| Rushing yards allowed | 148.8 | 30th |

Those figures point to work on both sides of the ball. A more dependable running game could make the offense less demanding on its quarterback. Better run defense could help the defense create more favorable passing situations. The organization needs a plan that connects personnel decisions with what its coaches are asking players to do.
Leadership means different jobs—and a shared standard
Benson’s assignment of responsibility provides a starting point. The following benchmarks are our proposed ways to evaluate the response; they are not team-announced requirements.A practical accountability test
| Level | Responsibility | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| Gayle Benson / ownership | Set expectations and evaluate football leadership | Clear standards, consistent review and decisions supported by results |
| Mickey Loomis / football operations | Build a roster that supports the coaching plan | Usable depth, sound personnel evaluations and fewer unaddressed roster weaknesses |
| Kellen Moore / coaching staff | Prepare the team and adapt during games | Clearer assignments, effective adjustments and better situational execution |
| Players / locker-room leaders | Prepare and execute consistently | Reliable communication, assignment discipline and corrections that carry into games |
Responsibilities reflect Benson’s remarks; evaluation benchmarks are The Who Dat Daily’s analysis. Full remarks
Loomis’ evaluation must extend beyond individual transactions. The larger questions concern roster balance, dependable depth and whether the available personnel fit the intended system. Coaches need workable alternatives when starters are unavailable. Football operations also needs candid feedback when the same roster weakness repeatedly limits the game plan.
Moore’s evaluation must distinguish development from repeated mistakes. A young player can struggle while learning. The staff still has to show that its teaching, deployment and adjustments are helping. Simplifying a responsibility can be useful when it allows a player to execute confidently; adding complexity only helps when the group can carry it out.
Ownership must evaluate its own decisions. Benson’s speech included responsibility for herself. A credible review should examine the process that produced the current leadership structure and the evidence supporting its continuation. Her remarks did not announce a coaching or general-manager change. Ownership’s stated responsibility
Locker-room leadership must show up between snaps. Veterans and younger contributors share responsibility for communication and preparation. A forceful speech can help establish urgency, but dependable execution is what makes the standard believable.
Wednesday injury report: 11 Saints listed

| EDGE | Anfernee Jennings | Knee | Did not practice |
| RB | Alvin Kamara | Back | Limited |

| QB | Tyler Shough | Left hand | Full |
| EDGE | Tyree Wilson | Ankle | Limited |

| DL | Colby Wooden | Toe | Limited |
| G | Jeremiah Wright | Concussion | Full |
Wednesday participation is not a final game-status designation. Zach Wood returned to practice but remained on Reserve/Injured. Official Saints injury report
Olave’s illness and Kamara’s limited participation are important offensive developments to monitor. Shough practiced fully despite appearing on the report with a left-hand issue. The defensive absences add another planning consideration as the Saints prepare for New York. Wednesday report
The leadership test is how well the team prepares its alternatives. Replacement players need clear responsibilities and meaningful preparation before they are required to handle a larger role.
The Giants present the next opportunity to respond
New Orleans visits the 3–1–1 Giants on Sunday, October 18. New York also had significant Wednesday absences: Abdul Carter, Jermaine Eluemunor, Andrew Thomas, Colton Hood and Tyler Nubin did not practice. Official Giants report
Those situations deserve monitoring as the week develops. They do not establish who will miss Sunday’s game. The Saints still need an approach that works against the personnel New York ultimately fields.
A useful response would include organized protection, fewer wasted offensive possessions and a defense that finishes its assignments. A victory would matter immediately. Sustained improvement would give Benson, the organization and its fans stronger evidence that the corrections are taking hold.
