Kirby Smart shares thoughts on potential Nick Saban coaching return

With rumors swirling about Nick Saban potentially coming out of retirement following the 2025 season, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart revealed during SEC media days on Tuesday why the seven-time national champion coach’s decision might not be up to him. “The boss,” meaning Saban’s wife, Terry, “will make that call for him, not him,” Smart cracked during his news conference on the second day of SEC’s annual media expo. Smart also joked that he tried to hire Saban as an analyst, “but he was overqualified.” Saban unexpectedly retired in January 2024 after 17 seasons as head coach at Alabama, where he won six national titles. Last fall, he worked as an ESPN college football analyst, including weekly “College GameDay” appearances.
