Knee Injury Sidelines Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III

Knee Injury Sidelines Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III

by Rell Wright/Pelican Contributor

New Orleans Pelicans fans received unfortunate news as sharpshooter Trey Murphy III suffered a left knee meniscus injury during a recent practice session. Sources have indicated that further testing is required to determine the extent of the injury and whether surgery will be necessary.

If surgical intervention is deemed necessary, Murphy could face a prolonged absence from the court, potentially sidelining him for the first few months of the season. On the other hand, a non-surgical approach might allow him to return to action sooner, with a recovery timeline estimated at approximately six to eight weeks.

Murphy’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Pelicans, given his outstanding contributions during his second season. Last season, he showcased his sharpshooting skills, averaging an impressive 14.5 points per game while shooting 40% from beyond the arc and maintaining an impressive 90% free throw accuracy. His ability to excel in catch-and-shoot situations, ranking fifth in the NBA for such 3-pointers, made him a valuable asset for the team.

Trey Murphy III, a 23-year-old guard, had a standout season for the Pelicans last year, starting in 65 games and impressing both fans and pundits with his performance. Drafted as the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft out of the University of Virginia, Murphy quickly made his mark as a promising talent in the league. With this injury setback, the Pelicans will be closely monitoring his recovery and hoping for a swift return to the court for one of their rising stars.
