In a rather lackluster outing, Shakur Stevenson emerged as the winner and claimed the vacant WBC lightweight title against Edwin De Los Santos at the T-Mobile Arena. Despite anticipation, the fight failed to deliver the excitement fans had hoped for, resulting in a disheartened crowd expressing their dissatisfaction through a chorus of boos. Both fighters struggled to land significant punches throughout the 12-round bout, leaving much to be desired in terms of action.

🥊 Santos -…
The judges’ scorecards favored Stevenson with scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112, but it was far from a dominant performance. Surprisingly, neither Stevenson nor De Los Santos managed to connect with double-digit punches in any round. CompuBox, in fact, registered De Los Santos’ output as the lowest in their 38-year history, with only 40 punches landed over the entire fight. Stevenson’s numbers were marginally better with 19 power punches and 44 jabs.
Both fighters, known for their southpaw counterpunching styles, seemed to hesitate in taking the initiative, resorting instead to feints and jabs from a distance. This lackluster affair resulted in many fans leaving early, disappointed despite Stevenson’s impressive reputation as one of boxing’s rising stars. Notably accompanied to the ring by legends Andre Ward and Terence Crawford, the 26-year-old Stevenson from Newark, New Jersey, now a three-division titleholder, will need to bounce back from this performance to retain his growing fan base.
While Stevenson’s previous victories in the 126 and 130-pound weight divisions had elevated his standing in the boxing world, questions may now arise regarding his ability to deliver entertaining bouts. On the other hand, Edwin De Los Santos displayed a sharp contrast in performance compared to his previous wins over Jose Valenzuela and Joseph Adorno. As Stevenson aims to cement his place among the boxing elite, he will need to regroup and provide more exhilarating displays to win back fans who were left disappointed by this lackluster victory.
