Lattimore available for trade?
by Niles Carpenter/Saints Contributor
The New Orleans Saints have made a significant move that could potentially alter the landscape of their defense by restructuring the contract of their star cornerback Marshon Lattimore, sparking discussions among several NFL teams about his availability for trade. According to insider reports, the Saints have creatively adjusted Lattimore’s hefty $15 million salary for 2024, which included $12 million fully guaranteed, to alleviate the daunting $26 million cap charge that loomed over the team.

This strategic maneuver involved reducing Lattimore’s base salary to the league minimum and converting the remainder into an option bonus spread over five years, thereby reducing his cap hit to a more manageable $14.6 million. This innovative contract restructuring, akin to methods previously seen with high-profile players in other franchises, not only provides the Saints with much-needed cap relief but also opens the door for potential trade discussions, signaling to the league that Lattimore could be on the move.
Despite the financial gymnastics surrounding his contract, Marshon Lattimore’s value to the Saints extends beyond the balance sheet, underscored by head coach Dennis Allen’s recent comments emphasizing Lattimore’s importance to the team amidst ongoing trade speculations. Lattimore’s tenure with the Saints has been marked by stellar performances, although marred by injuries in recent seasons, including a high ankle sprain and a lacerated kidney resulting from on-field accidents.
These injuries have sidelined Lattimore for a significant number of games, raising concerns about his long-term durability. Nevertheless, Allen’s commitment to focusing on Lattimore’s recovery and health highlights the cornerback’s integral role in the Saints’ defensive lineup, even as the restructured contract leaves the door open for potential changes in his career trajectory. As the NFL Scouting Combine progresses, the Saints and Lattimore find themselves at a crossroads, with the team balancing the cornerback’s contributions against the strategic advantages of his restructured contract and the possibilities it presents for the future.
