Lions agree to terms with DE Aidan Hutchinson on four-year, $180M extension

Detroit Lions star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson has agreed to a four-year contract extension, his agent, Mike McCartney, announced Wednesday. The contract locks Hutchinson down through the 2030 season.

The extension, since announced by the team, is for $180 million over four years with $141 million in total guarantees, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported. The deal includes a $29 million injury guarantee in 2029 that converts to a full guarantee a year early in March 2028.

The $45 million-per-year average slides between Micah Parsons ($46.5 million) and T.J. Watt ($41 million) among top edge players. The total guarantee is the most for a non-quarterback in NFL history.

The No. 2 overall pick in 2022 was under contract through 2026, set to earn $19.872 million on the fifth-year option.

Hutchinson becomes the latest menacing pass rusher to get paid in 2025, joining the likes of Parsons, Watt, Myles Garrett, Danielle Hunter, Maxx Crosby and Nik Bonitto.

The Lions and Hutchinson always expected to get a big-money extension done before he hit the final year of his rookie contract. The one concern was the Michigan product coming off a brutal season-ending injury in 2024. Would he be the same firebrand disruptor after the injury?

Not only has Hutchinson not lost a step coming off injury, but he’s been better.

In seven games in 2025, the Lions’ pass rusher ranks third in the NFL with 39 quarterback pressures, behind only Parsons (44) and Bonitto (40; one additional game played). His six sacks rank tied for seventh in the NFL.

Underscoring his scorching return from injury, Hutchinson’s 0.77-second get-off, per Next Gen Stats, ranks tied for third-best in the NFL this season. With a fast first step and improved rush moves, the 25-year-old is a game-wrecking beast.

A Plymouth, Mich., native who played college ball in Ann Arbor and was drafted by Detroit, the relentless heartbeat of the Lions defense will continue to create havoc for opponents traveling to Michigan.

Hutchinson is the latest Lion to get paid by general manager Brad Holmes, who continues to get out in front of paying his young players. In recent years, Detroit has locked down cornerstones in Hutchinson, Jameson Williams (three years, $80 million), Jared Goff (four years, $212M), Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120.01M), Penei Sewell (four years, $112M), Kerby Joseph (four years, $86M) and Alim McNeill (four years, $97M).

There could still be more down the pike in coming years with Jahmyr Gibbs, Brian Branch, Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell still playing on rookie deals, but the foundation is set.

The Lions won’t be going anywhere for a while.
