LSU’s standout defensive tackle, Maason Smith, is set to miss the opening game of the season against Florida State due to a one-game suspension imposed by the NCAA. The suspension comes as a result of an investigation that revealed Smith had received improper benefits during his tenure at LSU, as reported by Wilson Alexander of NOLA.com.
UPDATE: Multiple sources have confirmed Maason Smith and Kayshon Boutte participated in an autograph signing in the summer of 2021 prior to NIL going live.

Although the timing of the incident remains unclear, Smith’s absence will prompt the Tigers to lean on Mekhi Wingo, Jacobian Guillory, and Jordan Jefferson in the tackle position. Renowned for his potential, Smith displayed his skills on the defensive line during his freshman year, accumulating 19 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks. Smith’s return to the field is anticipated in the second week of the season against Grambling State, marking a year since his last game appearance.
