The new Coaches Poll places LSU behind No. 7 Miami and ahead of No. 9 Texas A&M. Georgia at No. 2 and Texas at No. 3 are the only SEC programs ranked above the Tigers.

Is No. 8 fair—or should LSU be higher?
Our assessment: No. 8 is a meaningful reward for an outstanding opener, with room for LSU to strengthen its case.
Fans can reasonably argue that the Clemson performance looked better than a typical eighth-ranked team’s debut. But one weekend also leaves substantial uncertainty. Voters must compare a fresh result with their expectations for teams they have seen only once.
The more productive question is whether LSU can keep delivering the habits associated with a top-10 team: efficient possessions, reliable protection, disciplined defense and clean execution when the game becomes uncomfortable.
An early ranking can rise quickly. Keeping it requires evidence every week.
What this means for LSU’s season
