LSU Loses No. 1 Prospect Bryce Underwood to Michigan: Brian Kelly Under Pressure

By Milton Manningham, LSU Football Contributor

The LSU Tigers suffered a massive blow to their football program as Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect and a five-star quarterback, flipped his commitment to Michigan. Underwood, originally pledged to LSU since January, has decided to stay closer to home and join the Wolverines, reportedly influenced by a lucrative NIL package valued at over $5 million.

Underwood’s commitment had been a cornerstone for LSU’s future, with the 6-foot-4, 214-pound phenom viewed as a game-changer for the program. His decision sends shockwaves through college football, elevating Michigan’s recruiting class while leaving LSU scrambling for answers.

This high-profile loss places head coach Brian Kelly squarely on the hot seat. Despite a massive $95 million contract running through 2031, Kelly’s tenure at LSU has been marred by underachievement relative to expectations. Underwood’s flip adds fuel to the fire, as critics point to Kelly’s inability to secure critical recruits as a reflection of his struggles on and off the field.

Speculation about Kelly’s job security intensified after LSU’s disappointing 27-16 loss to Florida, with many fans and analysts believing Underwood’s commitment was the only factor keeping Kelly safe for another season.

LSU’s Athletic Director Scott Woodward has publicly backed Kelly, citing the hefty $60 million buyout as a significant deterrent to a mid-contract dismissal. However, patience among fans is wearing thin, and Underwood’s decision to choose Michigan highlights a larger issue of competing in the NIL-driven recruiting landscape.

As the Tigers prepare for the offseason, the pressure on Kelly to deliver results—or risk a costly and contentious departure—has reached a boiling point.
