The waiting is over. No. 11 LSU opens the Lane Kiffin era against Clemson on Saturday night inside Tiger Stadium, giving the Tigers an immediate national-stage test with no warmup game and little margin for an uneven debut.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central on ABC. LSU enters as the ranked favorite, but this matchup is more complicated than the number beside its name. Both programs are replacing quarterbacks, both rebuilt important portions of their rosters, and both need an opening-night victory to establish the direction of their seasons.

LSU will start Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt, whose mobility and aggressive style should fit Kiffin’s offense. Clemson will counter with fourth-year junior Christopher Vizzina, a former backup who won the starting job after Cade Klubnik departed for the NFL. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has also indicated that freshman Tait Reynolds could play.

For LSU, the path to victory begins with making its new pieces look like a connected team before Clemson settles into the game.

1. Protect Sam Leavitt and Get Him Comfortable Early

Leavitt gives LSU a true dual-threat quarterback, but he is also returning from a foot injury and making his first start in a new offense. Kiffin should resist the temptation to begin the game with a series of slow-developing deep shots.

The better opening script is built around quick throws, run-pass options, movement passes and efficient touches for the running backs. Clemson’s defense wants to create negative plays and force a new quarterback into obvious passing downs. LSU must stay ahead of the chains and allow Leavitt to build confidence before asking him to attack vertically.

Leavitt’s legs should be a weapon, particularly on third down and in the red zone, but LSU cannot expose him to unnecessary hits. Designed movement and selective scrambling are more valuable than treating him like a full-time runner in Week 1.

2. Establish Caden Durham and Make Clemson Defend the Entire Formation

Kiffin’s reputation is built on offensive creativity, but LSU should not abandon balance. Caden Durham brings proven explosiveness and gives the Tigers a back capable of turning a crease into a game-changing play.

An effective inside running game would slow Clemson’s pass rush, keep the offense out of third-and-long and create favorable matchups outside. LSU should use motion and tempo to identify Clemson’s coverage, then force the defense to defend Durham between the tackles, Leavitt on the perimeter and the receivers downfield.

If Clemson can play with light boxes and still stop the run, LSU’s offense will become much easier to defend. If Durham consistently reaches the second level, Kiffin will control the matchup menu.

3. Feature Trey’Dez Green as the Matchup Breaker

At 6-foot-7, Trey’Dez Green is far more than a traditional tight end. He can align inline, in the slot or outside and force Clemson to choose between defending him with a smaller defensive back or a slower linebacker.

Green set an LSU single-season record for touchdown receptions by a tight end in 2025 and enters the opener as the Tigers’ most established returning receiving threat. LSU should use him early on third down and in the red zone, then create explosive opportunities off the attention he draws.

With so many new offensive pieces, Green can be the stabilizer—the player Leavitt trusts when protection breaks down or Clemson disguises coverage.

4. Put the Game on Christopher Vizzina’s Shoulders

Vizzina has appeared in 14 games but has made only one previous start. LSU’s defensive mission should be simple: stop Clemson’s early-down running game, create third-and-long situations and make the new starter process pressure in a hostile Tiger Stadium.

That does not mean blitzing recklessly. LSU should vary the picture with simulated pressure, late safety movement and different rush combinations. The goal is to make Vizzina hesitate without leaving easy explosive throws behind the pressure.

Containing Clemson’s perimeter weapons, including Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore, will require disciplined leverage from LSU’s secondary. The Tigers cannot allow a young quarterback to settle in through missed tackles and uncontested quick throws.

5. Win the Hidden-Yardage Battle

Opening games between talented teams are often decided by the mistakes nobody remembers in the preseason: a special-teams penalty, a failed fourth down, a turnover in plus territory or a busted coverage after a substitution.

LSU has spent the week surrounded by legal arguments over player eligibility and the SEC’s authority. The coaching staff must prevent that off-field fight from becoming an on-field distraction. Whether recently cleared additions Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris dress or play, LSU’s established game-day roster must be prepared to execute without confusion.

The Tigers do not need a perfect debut. They need cleaner football than Clemson: protect the ball, avoid drive-killing penalties and turn red-zone trips into touchdowns.

Matchup That Could Decide the Game

LSU’s offensive line against Clemson’s pressure packages is the central matchup. If Leavitt has time and Durham gives LSU a credible run threat, the Tigers have enough formations and playmakers to stress Clemson across the field. If Clemson consistently creates pressure with four rushers, LSU’s debut could become uncomfortable quickly.

Prediction

Tiger Stadium at night, Leavitt’s mobility and Kiffin’s ability to manufacture favorable matchups should eventually separate LSU. Clemson is talented enough to keep the game competitive, but asking a relatively inexperienced quarterback to win in Baton Rouge is a severe opening assignment.

Prediction: LSU 31, Clemson 20.

LSU’s formula is straightforward: settle Leavitt, establish Durham, feature Green, pressure Vizzina and refuse to let the week’s courtroom chaos follow the Tigers between the lines.
