In a bold and sweeping move, LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly has fired nearly his entire defensive coaching staff, including Defensive Coordinator Matt House, signaling a major shakeup in the Tigers’ football program as they look to rebound from a lackluster 2023 campaign.
The Dismissals
The headline departure is that of Matt House, the defensive coordinator, a critical figure in the team’s strategy. House’s dismissal is part of a broader overhaul that sees defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, safeties coach Kerry Cooks, and cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples also leaving the program. Steeples, Cooks, and Lindsey were integral parts of Kelly’s original team assembled when he took the reins in 2022, making their exits particularly noteworthy.
Defensive Struggles
This drastic decision comes on the heels of a season where LSU’s defense was notably underwhelming. The Tigers, who had high hopes following a successful SEC West victory in 2022 and a preseason top-five ranking, found themselves grappling with defensive inefficiencies. They ranked 105th in total defense and 81st in scoring defense nationally, a stark contrast to their anticipated performance. Alarmingly, LSU conceded an average of over 28 points per game, with this number ballooning to an embarrassing 47.3 points in their three losses.
Retained Staff
Amidst this sweeping change, defensive line coach John Jancek and outside linebackers coach Bob Diaco remain with the team. Jancek’s experience and versatility, having shifted roles within the defensive coaching staff due to Lindsey’s health issues, likely played a role in his retention.
Looking Ahead
Coach Kelly’s decision to overhaul the defensive staff is a clear message of his commitment to turning around LSU’s fortunes. This shakeup suggests a significant shift in defensive strategy and philosophy as the Tigers prepare for the 2024 season. With new coaching personnel expected to come in, LSU fans will be eager to see a rejuvenated defense capable of living up to the program’s storied history and high expectations.
The coming months will be crucial for Kelly and LSU as they rebuild their defensive coaching team, aiming to rectify the shortcomings of the past season and restore the Tigers as a formidable force in college football.
