LSU’s Woodward Responds to Governor Landry’s National Anthem Mandate

by Milton Manningham/ LSU Football Contributor

In a striking address to recent demands by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward has firmly articulated the university’s stance regarding the national anthem policy for student-athletes. The controversy ignited when Gov. Landry advocated for a mandate obliging student-athletes to attend the national anthem ceremonies pre-competition, under threat of scholarship revocation. This move came to light following the LSU women’s basketball team’s absence from the anthem at a pivotal Elite Eight clash in New York. Woodward, in a deliberate response on X, emphasized LSU’s unwavering respect for national symbols while hinting at a review of existing protocols.

“At LSU, our commitment to the flag, anthem, and country remains unwavering,” he stated, reaffirming the institution’s dedication to embodying the core values and aspirations of its community and the nation. Amidst this backdrop, Gov. Landry has acknowledged Woodward’s stance, simultaneously urging the NCAA to enforce anthem attendance for the imminent Final Four matchups, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue around patriotism and collegiate sports.
