Michael Carter II, John Metchie III involved in trade with Super Bowl contender

The Philadelphia Eagles traded WR John Metchie and a 2027 6th round pick to the New York Jets for CB Michael Carter and a 2027 7th round pick. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news Wednesday.

Metchie was acquired by the Eagles back in August in a trade with the Houston Texans, where he began his career out of Alabama. Carter has spent his entire career with the Jets since 2021, coming from Duke.

Metchie only reeled in four catches for 18 yards during seven games for Philadelphia in 2025. He was listed as the No. 4 WR behind AJ Brown , DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson . He also had seven kick returns for an average of 17.1 yards per return.

Over the course of his career (prior to 2025), Metchie had 40 catches for 415 yards, one touchdown and 10.4 yards per catch. He did not play in 2022 due to acute promyelocytic leukemia. Remarkably, Metchie recovered after he was drafted out of Alabama.

After reeling in 16 catches in 16 games in 2023, Metchie improve his stat line last season. He reeled in 24 passes for 257 yards and caught his first career touchdown.

A second round pick out of Alabama in 2022, Metchie broke out during the 2020 and ’21 campaigns. He helped the Crimson Tide win the national title in 2020, alongside WR Smith, who won the Heisman Trophy that season.
