Mike McDaniel hot seat: Dolphins owner Stephen Ross weighs in on Miami head coach

There’s been some talk this week that Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel could be coaching to save his job in Thursday’s Week 3 road contest against the Buffalo Bills. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on the Prime Video pre-show that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross plans to be patient in hopes that McDaniel and Miami can turn things around after an 0-2 start to the 2025 season.

“Stephen Ross, the Dolphins owner, does not want to fire Mike McDaniel — he doesn’t,” Rapoport said. “He wants this to work. He likes him, he believes in him, he has invested in him, including giving him a contract extension last year. [McDaniel] still has two years and about $19 million left after this year. And whenever he has had to, whenever possible, he has been patient.

Ross signed McDaniel to a three-year extension in August 2024. Rapoport said that his sense is “nothing is imminent” regarding McDaniel being fired. However, that could change.

“My sense is nothing is imminent for the Dolphins on that front,” Rapoport said. “However, there’s a caveat: that can change. If fans suddenly stop showing up to the stadium or players stop playing for him, that can alter the situation.”
