The New Orleans Pelicans have added swingman Matt Ryan to their roster after claiming him off waivers, according to a recent report from Shams Charania of The Athletic. Ryan, originally undrafted from Chattanooga in 2020, had an eventful 2022/23 season, beginning with the Los Angeles Lakers and subsequently moving to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
His tenure with the Lakers was brief, playing only 12 games before being released. He then joined the Timberwolves under a two-way contract, yet again finding limited playtime. Last season, Ryan showcased modest averages of 3.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game, with shooting splits of .370/.381/.833 across 34 games.
His acquisition by the Pelicans comes as the team seeks to bolster their shooting options, especially in light of injuries to key players Trey Murphy and Naji Marshall. Notably, Ryan’s proficiency from beyond the arc—landing 38.1% of his 84 three-point shots last season—could offer the Pelicans some much-needed perimeter firepower.
