“Saints Add Some More Help as Injuries Mount”
by Niles Carpenter/Saints Contributor
The New Orleans Saints are making significant moves as the NFL season progresses, signaling their determination to enhance their team dynamics and depth. In a strategic decision announced by Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis, the Saints have signed defensive tackle John Penisini to the practice squad. A third-year NFL veteran, Penisini, who stands at 6-2 and weighs 325 pounds, brings considerable experience to the team.
Originally selected by the Detroit Lions in the 2020 NFL Draft from the University of Utah, he has shown his capability with 49 tackles, one sack, and a fumble recovery in his career. His recent stint with the Carolina Panthers in the offseason and training camp this year further adds to his diverse experience.
In addition to Penisini’s signing, the Saints have also restored practice squad wide receiver Shaquan Davis from Injured Reserve. This move indicates a strengthening of the offensive lineup, potentially increasing the team’s depth in the receiving corps. However, the Saints have terminated the practice squad contract of kicker Austin Seibert, suggesting a reevaluation of their special teams strategy.
Meanwhile, the Saints’ Week 14 injury report presents a mixed picture. Defensive ends Isaiah Foskey and Cameron Jordan, along with running back Kendre Miller, wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, and quarterback Taysom Hill, did not participate in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, pointing to concerns in both the defensive and offensive units. On a brighter note, center Erik McCoy and tackle Ryan Ramczyk showed progress, moving from limited participation to full participation.
