New Orleans Saints Training Camp Injury Notes

The New Orleans Saints are grappling with a series of injury concerns that have cast a shadow over the team’s preparations. One of the most significant blows has been the absence of Ryan Connelly from Tuesday’s practice due to a knee injury. Described by Head Coach Dennis Allen as “pretty significant,” the injury’s severity has raised questions about Connelly’s future contributions.

Prior to the injury setback, Connelly was actively competing for a depth linebacker role, making his absence a notable void in the lineup. As the team and fans await further details, the timeline for his recovery remains uncertain.

Niko Lalos, another player whose potential was on display, was forced to miss Tuesday’s practice due to a groin injury. While Allen expressed optimism that the injury isn’t severe, it’s an unfortunate setback for Lalos, who made a strong impact during the Saints’ preseason victory over the Chargers.

His performance, highlighted by five tackles and three sacks in just 27 defensive snaps, underscored his quest for a spot on the final 53-man roster. Lalos’s injury raises questions about his immediate availability and how it might affect his chances of securing a coveted depth position.

Running back Darrel Williams has also faced a setback, leaving Tuesday’s practice early due to a groin injury. Williams, who joined the Saints in mid-August, was looking to solidify his place in the team’s backfield rotation.

His prior experience with the Cardinals demonstrated his value as a depth piece, but the recent groin injury adds a layer of uncertainty to his prospects. As Williams aims to earn a place behind established backs like Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams, and Kendre Miller, his recovery timeline becomes crucial.

On a more positive note, the Saints saw the return of some key players to practice. Demario Davis, the veteran middle linebacker, returned to 11-on-11 drills after dealing with a calf injury since early August. Davis’s consistency and leadership have been pivotal for the team, making his recovery a promising sign. Similarly, Andrus Peat, who had been sidelined due to a quadriceps injury since late July, participated in 11-on-11 drills, likely reclaiming his role at left guard now that he’s back in action.

Additionally, Caesar Ruiz, who had been nursing a shoulder injury, also returned to practice for 11-on-11 drills. While Head Coach Dennis Allen emphasized the team’s cautious approach, Ruiz’s presence bodes well for the offensive line’s stability. With both Peat and Ruiz back on the field, the Saints’ offensive front gains strength and continuity as the regular season draws near.
