One of the league’s best young defenceman has signed long-term. On Monday, it was announced that the Montréal Canadiens and Lane Hutson had agreed to an eight-year deal worth $8.85 million beginning in the 2026-27 season. While it may seem like a lot for a defenceman entering his sophomore season, Huston has already shown he’[s among the league’s best young defenders. Drafted 62nd overall in the 2022 draft by the Canadiens, Hutson scored six goals and 66 points in 82 games last season, edging out Macklin Celebrini and Dustin Wolf for the Calder Trophy. At just 21 years old, Hutson figures to be a part of the young Canadiens core for a long time. They also have 25-year-old right-shot defenceman, Noah Dobson, under contract until the end of the 2032-33 season.
