Copied!
Once the Green Bay Packers’ season is over, and they hope it’s later rather than sooner, the plan is to act quickly for one of the organization’s most visible and important faces.
Sources say the Packers plan to engage head coach Matt LaFleur in contract discussions shortly after the season ends, with the mutual goal of extending his contract. LaFleur, whose deal expires following the 2026 season, has a 76-40-1 record and is widely considered to be one of the better coaches in the NFL.
The Packers visit the Chicago Bears tonight at 8 p.m. ET on Prime Video in the Wild Card Round, and LaFleur’s looming contract situation has been one of the lingering storylines. Yet there is one truth that should not be discounted: LaFleur is not coaching for his job tonight, sources say.
Packers CEO Ed Policy has worked with LaFleur for seven years, which includes before he succeeded Mark Murphy in July of 2025. They know each other well. Policy, who has been with the Packers since August 2012, was on the committee to hire LaFleur, and he has all the data points he needs.

LaFleur’s job status will not be determined by four quarters of football tonight in Chicago.
Of course, with John Harbaugh no longer the Ravens’ head coach, and Mike McDaniel getting fired in Miami after believing he was safe, there are no certainties at any level in the NFL.
But the entire plan for the Packers had been for the coach’s contract to have two years left when a new CEO took over, so he could process and examine for one entire season and make a full decision when that season ended. That’s why LaFleur’s contract was not touched last summer, and that’s why the time to strike is this offseason.
Green Bay likes LaFleur, respects him and believes he’s a great fit both in the organization and in the community. If everything goes well, the hope is that remains for a long time.
