Pelicans Collapse late against Rockets 106-104

by Rell Wright/Pelican Contributor

In a thrilling NBA showdown, the New Orleans Pelicans succumbed to a narrow defeat against the Houston Rockets, with a final score of 106-104. The game, characterized by its intensity and physicality, showcased the individual brilliance of players from both teams but ultimately highlighted the Pelicans’ critical shortcomings in crucial moments.

Zion Williamson, the powerhouse for New Orleans, delivered an impressive performance, scoring 28 points predominantly through robust power moves near the basket. Brandon Ingram and Trey Murphy complemented Williamson’s efforts by adding 19 and 14 points, respectively. However, the Pelicans’ Achilles heel was their lack of precision in the game’s dying moments, coupled with a surprising struggle at the free-throw line. Williamson himself missed five free throws, contributing to the team’s total of nine missed opportunities from the line. These lapses, along with two pivotal turnovers in the last two minutes, sealed their fate in a game that was within their grasp.

On the other side, Houston’s Alperen Sengun emerged as a standout performer, turning what was anticipated to be a balanced matchup with New Orleans veteran Jonas Valanciunas into a one-sided affair. Sengun’s career-high 37 points and 11 rebounds were instrumental in the Rockets’ victory. He received ample support from Jabari Smith Jr., who contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Fred VanVleet, who added 10 points to the team’s tally. The first half of the game was particularly intense, featuring a brief scuffle instigated by a tussle between Jose Alvarado and Smith, leading to technical fouls for Alvarado, Smith, and Naji Marshall of the Pelicans.
