The New Orleans Pelicans faced a daunting challenge in Cleveland, falling 128-100 to a red-hot Cavaliers team led by Ty Jerome’s explosive career-high 29 points. Injury woes plagued the Pelicans, leaving them without their top six scorers and forcing head coach Willie Green to rely on makeshift lineups, including newly signed veteran Elfrid Payton.
Payton showed flashes of leadership in his first NBA game since 2022, contributing 11 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Cleveland’s relentless offense. Rookie Antonio Reeves provided a bright spot, erupting for 34 points, far surpassing his season average, while Brandon Boston Jr. chipped in 14 points. Despite these individual efforts, New Orleans struggled to keep pace, especially during Cleveland’s dominant second quarter.
Jerome’s stunning performance, including seven first-half three-pointers, highlighted Cleveland’s firepower and underscored the Pelicans’ defensive gaps. The Cavaliers’ ability to capitalize on New Orleans’ depleted roster was evident, with Georges Niang and rookie Jaylon Tyson adding significant contributions. While the Pelicans showed resilience in spurts, their undermanned lineup was outclassed by Cleveland’s depth and efficiency.
This loss marks a tough stretch for New Orleans, who must regroup quickly with the defending champion Golden State Warriors coming to town on Friday. As the Pelicans navigate their injury crisis, the hope lies in turning these adversities into growth opportunities for their young and unproven players.
