The New Orleans Pelicans have decided to defer the No. 17 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft to the Los Angeles Lakers, opting instead to receive the Lakers’ 2025 first-round pick, sources tell @hoopshype. This strategic move allows the Lakers to control the 2024 selection while giving the Pelicans a more flexible draft position in the future.
The Lakers also own the 55th pick in the June draft. The Pelicans have until 11:59 ET on Saturday to inform league of their intentions. The pick is the final of three first-rounders the Lakers owed the Pelicans in Davis trade. https://t.co/r01h5D0aNQ

With the Pelicans already holding the No. 21 pick in what many consider a weak draft, deferring the pick not only enhances their future draft capital but also eliminates a $3.8 million cap hold from their books. This financial maneuver is significant for the Pelicans, offering them more flexibility in managing their salary cap and potentially making more impactful moves in the coming seasons.
